Snow White’s Scary Adventures is Based on a Movie
Next on taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures is that it is based on a movie. Back in 1934, Walt Disney started to make the animated movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It came out to theatres in 1937. It was the first full length animated movie that Walt Disney made. He was mocked while it was in production.
Snow White was made using cel animation. This is where each scene was hand-drawn and painted onto a clear cel. The Disney company had developed a multiplane camera. Then, they would paint the background of the scenes on a different cel while the main characters would be painted on a separate cel. With the multiplane camera, each cel would be stacked in a frame-like structure. The camera would be on top looking down at the cels. Being that the background was separate from the foreground, they could move the background and make it look like the characters were moving through an area. For example, when Snow White is running through the forest. The trees and bushes were painted on a separate cel from Snow White.
I tell you, can you imagine the work that went into these older movies, before the use of computer animation?
What is Snow White’s Scary Adventures
Third on the list for taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures is finding out what is Snow White’s Scary Adventures. This attraction at Disneyland is a dark ride. This means that the ride takes place indoors in the dark. There are scenes in the ride that are lit up by lights.
The vehicles for Snow White are mine cars that have two rows for you to sit in. Each vehicle has a name carved in the front.
Snow White’s Scary Adventures takes you through the story of Snow White. When she meets the seven Dwarfs, running scared through the forest, meeting the witch, going through the witches dungeon, and more!
Beware of the Witch
Another thing to check out while taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures is to watch out for the witch! On the outside of the Snow White’s Scary Adventures attraction in Disneyland, is a window up above the entrance. In this window, you can see what looks like velvety red curtains. Keep an out at this window. Make sure to keep looking for a while. Every so often the wicked Queen will pull back the curtains and look out the window! A nice Disney touch to this attraction.
Interactive Line
While taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures in Disneyland, be sure to check out an interactive feature that is in the line. Disney is known for having lines that have things for you to look at and play with while you wait. Snow White is no different! At the entrance for this attraction is a book and a golden apple. Try to grab the golden apple and when you do, you will hear the wicked Queen cackle. A nice Disney touch to this classic attraction in Disneyland.
Apple Missing in Action
Next on taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures is an interesting, continuing story that happened over the years. Inside of this attraction is a scene with the wicked Queen holding a red apple. Guests would try to reach out and take the apple. Over and over again, the guests were successful and the apple would be taken from the attraction! As a result, the apple was changed during the 1982/1983 Fantasyland remodeling.

Changes in 1983
Another item on the list of taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures is the changes that happened in 1983. One of the changes was the name of the ride. From 1955 to 1983 it was called Snow White’s Adventures. When guests would ride the attraction, they were getting scared. As a result, when Fantasyland was remodeled, Disney changed the name of the attraction to Snow White’s Scary Adventures to give guests a heads up on what the attraction was like.
Another change was that Disney added Snow White to the attraction. When Snow White, Mr. Toad’s, and Peter Pan’s Flight first opened in 1955, they were designed with the main character missing from the attractions. This was because Walt Disney wanted you to go through the attractions and be the main character yourself. That you were the one going through and experiencing the story. Unfortunately, people that rode the attractions did not understand the concept that Disney was going for. Therefore, during the 1982/1983 remodel, Disney decided to add in the characters to the rides.
The third change was regarding the missing apple that I mentioned up above. During the remodel the apple was replaced by a holographic apple. This way when guests would try to grab the apple, their hand would go right through the apple! No more missing apples.

Changes in 2020
Finally on taking A Closer Look at Snow White’s Scary Adventures is the changes that are coming. Snow White’s Scary Adventures is still under construction. As a result of COVID, it is delayed.
However, Disney did announce that the outside of the attraction would be changed to resemble the Sleeping Beauty Castle that is right next door. Another change is that there will be a new ending scene. Disney has said online that Snow White will be reunited with her animal friends with the castle in the distance. One of the new scenes is Snow White waking in the forest with her animal friends.
I don’t like change, but I am curious as to how the new scenes will be. Snow White’s animal friends are so cute in the movie! It will be fun to see them on the ride when it reopens.
In Conclusion
Snow White’s Scary Adventures has been around since opening day in 1955 and it is still in Disneyland today! Even after all these years have passed, it is still a classic Disneyland attraction. It is getting refreshed again, but I feel it will only enhance the ride experience.
