Disneyland is unique Cast Members is part three for the series on Why Disneyland is Unique. In part one of this series I had mentioned a little about cast members and focused on the custodians. Part 2 I talked about the lines for the rides in the park. Therefore, today for part 3, I would like to talk about all the other cast members.

Why Disneyland is Unique Cast Members

The workers at the parks are called cast members. It is like being a cast in a movie, and Disneyland is the “stage” so to speak. They go through a lot of training before they start. They learn how to treat you, the guest, things they can and can’t do/say, and if it is a character, they go through even more training to become that character.

How Cast Members Point

One thing that most people may not notice is that when a cast member is giving directions to someone, they will point with either 2 fingers or their whole hand. There are two reasons for this. The first one is that in some countries it is considered rude/offensive to point with one finger. The next reason is that it is more accurate to show the direction when you use two fingers or your whole hand.

Disney Training

I am guessing, assuming really that they must go through training on how to handle angry or upset guests as well. It seems to me they have certain terminology they use to try and calm down the guests. They all tend to use the same words/phrases.

Cast members usually have a smile on their face and are extremely helpful and very nice. Not something you can readily find elsewhere anymore. During our last trip, I went into the Market House (aka Starbucks). I waited in line and ordered my coffee. Then waited for my coffee. After I finally got it, I walked over to the counter to get a straw. I was attempting to put the straw in when the cup all of a sudden slid on the counter and fell. Oh my goodness was I embarrassed!  It spilled everywhere. I started to tear up. One worker that was wiping and cleaning things down came over and cleaned it up. I apologized over and over. While he was cleaning one of the cast members that was making the drinks had made me a new one! I was so thankful!

Cast Members Help Make Magic Moments

This is part of why Disneyland is unique! Sometimes the cast members will do something to help make your trip a little more magical. However, you never know what or when you could be on the receiving end of this Disney magic.

Another example of this was also during our last trip. My Mom was having a hard time. It was the first family trip since my Dad passed. She was recovering from a broken ankle that included surgery. It was not an ideal trip. (I still tell her we need a do-over… are you reading this Mom? 😉 )

Custodians Create Magic Too!

One night after the park was closed, we stuck around on Main Street. My brother and I were up at the train station sitting on a bench. Mom was on her scooter down below. We just sat and watched the sea of people leaving. Listening to music and looking at the castle. One of the custodians came up to Mom. She was so sweet to Mom. Asked her how she was doing. Mom told her not well and that all these people, so many people were everywhere! This cast member told Mom to look at the castle and to ignore everything else. Just focus on the castle and how pretty it looks. She gave Mom a Snow White Button. Mom says to this day she will never forget her! It helped to brighten my Mom’s mood.

Cast members have to deal with so many people. I just can’t imagine how they can still be pleasant after dealing with so many people. Not all guests are nice and pleasant. Not to say that ALL cast members are nice 100% of the time. They are only human. But I have noticed that most are more pleasant than other places I have gone to.

One More Thing:

Finally, I would also like to point out one more thing before I finish why Disneyland is unique Cast Members. There is one attraction that you will not see the cast members smile. That attraction is at the Haunted Mansion. For these cast members, their part is to be solemn and serious. As a result, don’t take offense if they do not smile back at you.

In Conclusion

Finally, I hope that this gives you some insight into the cast members at Disneyland and how they help to make the Disneyland Resort Unique.
